Wax + Heat = Fun Melted Colors

Maybe our wasn't as gorgeous as the above piece, but we loved ours just the same (clearly all that matters)!

The tape trick did't quite work. Some of the girls liked what it left behind when we took the tape off, some didn't - so they just melted again to re-cover. Overall, SUCCESS!

A Crafty Halloween

Halloween crafts are a must. Spooky music, too.
(Pandora has a Children's Halloween station!)

BOO!
So easy. Tissue paper, red marker, felt "iris" and a bead for the pupil!

Okay - enough cuteness already! :)

Learning a New Skill (Dad would be proud!)

Hammer & Nails aren't just for Dads...

Look at her focus and perfect finger placement!
This is one of Children's Art Studio's favorite projects. It requires very simple items - follow these instructions and try it at home!  (Do not be afraid that kids can't handle these items...they are naturals, I promise.  Age 5-6+)

  1. Get a scrap piece of wood.  I go to Lowe's and have them cut a 10x6x12 (or something similar) into 1 foot pieces.  This gives me plenty of even sized blocks of wood.
  2. Artists choose one color to paint the entire piece of wood (acrylic paint covers best)
  3. Then have kids choose 3-5 colors of TEMPERA (washable!) paint to add via splatter method :)
  4. Add glitter glue, buttons, whatever else to spruce it up
  5. Let dry over night
  6. Next, nails (gold and silver nails) and a kiddie hammer. Make sure you give them a "How-To" tutorial for safety and procedures.  Making sure they feel comfortable and have it down pat before you let them go it alone is a must.
  7. Artists can decide where and how many nails they use (the more the better)
  8. After this is done, give students a ton of different string/yarn options
  9. Show kiddo how to tie one end of the string to one nail and "connect the dots" but stringing yarn around certain nails (wrapping around nails to create tension on yarn). Stop and tie off on a different nail when yarn starts to run short.
  10. Continue this with different colors of yarn or string for a geometric (almost kaleidoscope) look
  11. Finish project by nailing a zigzag picture hanger in the center of the back of the wood
Cheap packages of this hardware available at Lowe's
(Great supply to have around the art studio)

Have fun and post pictures!

Dandy Decoupage Day

Plan A: Decoupage with pressed/dried leaf and flower pieces.  We discovered right away that these didn't stick very well.
Plan B: The leaves that did stick well were the coffee filter leaves from our previous project. (Yeah! No waste!)
Materials: Thrift store glass (bowls, vases, plates...anything will do the trick), tissue paper, coffee filter leaves, Modge-Podge, foam brushes, hot glue, buttons, and a tea light (probably LED, so kids could keep and use in their own room).
For 5 year old kids - this was a good project, as it did challenge them in some ways.  I had to do the gluing of the buttons, but they chose what and where they would embellish.  Their pieces look great illuminated :)

Daydreaming about art projects... (ha ha!)

Fall is slowly here, and as I stare out my window at work, I can't seem to help but imagine art projects.  I start to create them in my head - and then I need to come back down to earth and remember --- After School Art Class is at 4PM! I've got to wait until then to start thinking about art projects! Back to work... (but I am still sooo excited)!

Look at those colors!

I just realized the studio is kind of pretty...

I just kept taking pictures!  Enjoy the artistic inspiration.

Even the supplies looked particularly nice that day.
This is how I felt!
So easy - paint frames on the wall and you can constantly switch out the art work.

Doesn't this make you want to paint?

Perfect Start to Fall

This was a super easy project and perfect for the hour and fifteen minute art time we had.
  1. We started with coffee filters and watercolor
  2. The first step was to spray the coffee filters with water
  3. Then added watercolor to wet coffee filters

This is what the newspaper looked like afterwards - pretty!

  1. After about 10 or so coffee filters were painted we went outside for a nature search
  2. We found branches that had lots of extending twigs to add our own leaves
  3. We took the leaves off if the branch had any on, because we added our own "forever" leaves
  4. After coming inside, the coffee filters weren't quite dry, so we used a hair dryer to finish the job.
  5. Then, folded each coffee filter as many time as possible into a small triangle and cut out a leaf shape (I drew a leaf shape for the students)
  6. Hot glue did the trick to the branch! Viola!

Saturday Studio Art

Bring your kids tomorrow 10:45am to Children's Art Studio. They will thank you (check out those smiles!) and you get a breather.

Our 3rd try at "Pop" Art!

Just add a little vinegar and baking soda.
(Think Elementary school volcanoes...)
